Clean drinking water supply begins in Gwadar
In a major breakthrough for Gwadar’s residents, a citywide supply of clean drinking water officially began on March 6, following the completion of a new water pipeline network originating from Kalanchi Para.
Director General of the Gwadar Development Authority (GDA), Saif Ullah Khatran, hailed the achievement as a crucial step towards ensuring safe drinking water for all. “This initiative will go a long way in addressing Gwadar’s longstanding water scarcity issue,” he remarked.
A senior GDA official explained that many households in Gwadar were previously forced to consume contaminated water due to leakage and sewage mixing in broken pipelines. To tackle the issue, the GDA undertook a complete overhaul—replacing outdated and corroded infrastructure with a 141-kilometre-long, modern, insulated water supply system, developed at a cost of Rs. 3.5 billion.
Residents in areas such as Faqir Colony and Dhoor have already been connected to the new system and are expected to start receiving clean water within the current week.
This progress follows the successful completion of a 158-kilometre-long pipeline, which now links the Shadi Kaur and Swad Dams directly to the city. In addition, GDA has constructed four underground water storage tanks across different parts of Gwadar, collectively capable of holding up to 10 million gallons.
To ensure an uninterrupted flow of clean water, key reservoirs near Gwadar—including Ankara Dam, Swad Dam, and Shadi Kaur Dam—have been interlinked. The GDA official explained that a 67-kilometre transmission line from Swad Dam, with a supply capacity of 5 million gallons per day (MGD), has been installed at a cost of Rs. 3.8 billion. Meanwhile, Shadi Kaur Dam is now delivering 2.5 MGD of potable water to the Chaud Daggar area, following the completion of a Rs. 3.5 billion project.
The interconnected network also includes Ankara Dam, constructed several years ago, which provides an additional 2.7 MGD. By merging these water sources, the GDA aims to guarantee a stable and continuous supply for all of Gwadar, particularly the older parts of the city.
